Courageous Colts bow out of the Cup Final - 3 -1 after extra time

The boys always knew this was going to be the tough game.  They were up against a team that only lost once before in the League and had a reputation for precise play, and winning.

Both teams were applauded onto the pitch, and the touch line was full of proud parents, cheerleaders, coaches and managers.  It was great to see all 15 squad players in their Colts kit.

The match started and immediately Ashtead came under pressure from the fast playing forward and mid field players of Teddington AFC. Sam Hunt and Jacob Vann had to step up a gear and intercepted two clean breaks through the mid field and quickly fed the ball up to Jason Cook to allow the Colts to launch a counter attack.  Charlie Sidwell in midfield tirelessly worked the touch line and chased back to put in some great tackles and win the ball to then feed the ball forward to Ethan and Ben P.   The pressure continued with Daniel and Jason putting in some great breaks, and the whole team throwing everything at tackling and ball passing. Teddington held fast and our attacks were turned into defensive movements in a flash.

Fin Turner was in fine form and put in some great saves, and together with the defence, cleared the line on many occasions and held back the unrelenting Teddington pressure.  It was tense, exciting stuff and at half time the score was still 0-0.

The team talks rallied the troops and both Ashtead and Teddington came out on fire and the game continued at an electrifying pace. Teddington just seemed to have the edge and kept piling the pressure on Ashtead.   15 minutes in, and a fast turn of play saw Teddington out of position which was capitalised with an excellent clearance by Finn Turner, passed through the middle and the ball broke for Ethan May, who again made one of his screaming runs straight through the centre of the field and hit the ball cleanly on the edge of the box to the top right hand corner of the net.  Ashtead 1, Teddington AFC 0.  The crowd went wild!

Teddington came straight back, lifted their heads and their game and came close within five minutes following a free kick outside the box.  Ashtead were lucky the ball was tipped over the bar by Finn.  However, within two minutes they had broken through the defence – fast one twos and had tucked the ball neatly into the top corner of the net past Finn’s hands – 1 – 1.  Teddington were not going to let Ethan May make another break and they carefully marked him with two defenders.  Every move he made was checked by the opposition.  The pressure was on and it seemed that Teddington were destined to make another breakthrough.  However, the strong defending and midfield lines of Ashtead held fast, with some excellent counter play by Jacob Vann, clearing his line and passing the ball forward to Harry Plumb and then through to the shadow marked Ethan May, but the Teddington defence was too strong.

Full time score – Ashtead Colts 1 Teddington AFC 1.

Extra time started and it was clear that Teddington had decided that it was now or never and within the first minute they had upped their game considerably.  Somehow they managed to get round the mid field past defence and cleanly flipped the ball to one side of Finn to make the scores 2 – 1.  The boys couldn’t believe it – they had seen their 1-0 lead melt.  However, Teddington were not content with this and were clearly rattled by the fact that Ashtead had scored first and they had come close to losing this Cup Final.

Just before the end of the first half a second shot was pushed wide followed by a direct hit which took the scores to 3-1.   Ashtead valiantly played on and threw everything at Teddington.  Each player put everything into the game.  Johnny Millet came on but couldn’t find his way through and Teddington’s tails were certainly up as they could sense victory.  The boys didn’t give up and to the end they fought very hard and were determined to try to pull the scores back and seek out that elusive victory, but it was not to be.

Extra time score Ashtead Colts 1 Teddington AFC 3

It was a thrilling and exciting Cup Final and the boys should be proud that they played with such commitment and skill, but unfortunately on the day Teddington showed that they have earned their place at the top of the League and earned their Cup Final win.

The Colts did amazingly well to reach the Final and they proved that they play well as a team and have some incredibly gifted and talented players and they will be back next year – and this time they will win!
